Recap: The G.B Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero 1985...

On 12th March, Atlas held a retrospective tasting on G.B. Burlotto’s Barolo Monvigliero spanning 2014-1985. Given that the estate only produces up to 500 cases of the Monvigliero each year, it was a challenge and a feat to put together such a line-up of these wines.

The Diminich Family Education Trust Charity Shoot

It was a crisp and sunny Saturday morning outside of High Wycombe and a fresh blanket of snow lay over the ground. The odd crack of a shotgun pierced the quiet country air as a crowd gathered at the shooting ground of EJ Churchill. Richard, Hannah and I joined an Atlas client who organised the charity clay shoot to help raise funds for the children of a colleague who had sadly passed away. Atlas provided the wines for the lunch and it was a privilege to be asked to support such a worthy cause. Whilst I cannot judge who was the best shot from Atlas, I can say that it was an enjoyable morning in the fresh country air shooting at the unsuspecting clays. After three hours of flurries, we all retired to the warmth of the lodge for a glass of Guy Charlemagne Grand Cru, Les Coulmets Blanc de Blanc 2013. Guy Charlemagne is a grower which we at Atlas have followed for some time, given the quality on show. The Coulmets offers chalky mineral notes and freshly baked bread on the nose. The palate has a graceful softness to it; supple, pure, defined with mouth-watering orchard notes. Elegant, with such a juicy, fresh quality to the fruit.

2000-2001 Comparative Bordeaux Tasting

On 22nd November we hosted a 2000-2001 Bordeaux Comparative Tasting and Dinner at The Berkeley. For us, it was fascinating to see just how the 2001s stepped up in the glass; it is worth reiterating that this overshadowed vintage should be substantially outclassed by the 2000s, or so critic’s notes and scores tell us. The aim of the tasting wasn’t to claim that the vintages were equal, but to highlight that the gulf in quality between certain pairings is not as vast as you might be led to believe; the 2001s were not out of place in the overall line up. Stylistically, the 2000s are riper, show more concentration and more evident structure – they will age over a longer period too, but they are already open for business. The 2001s showed charm, elegance, soft, supple textures and bright acidities – they don’t lack concentration, but they are lighter in body. It is too easy to just draw attention to alleged five-star vintages and miss where value can be found and where clients can find appealing wines that don’t need a lengthy snooze in a cool cellar. Incidentally, according to Parker, the Ducru Beaucaillou 2001 should have been drunk up by 2016 and the Lynch-Bages should be polished off next yea
